The parking area near the cache has always been my favorite stop
on Skyline Drive. Dinosaur Hill has a slightly better view, but
it's always busy and you have to climb the steps to get a view. On
cold winter day this spot is a much better place to enjoy the view
from your car, read a comic book, or eat your lunch
(Whoppers!).
If you look hard enough from the parking area you can make
out:
Hangers at Ellsworth AFB (large
buildings in northeast, 10.6 miles)
Thompson Butte (cone shaped butte in southeast, 16.6 miles)
Railroad Buttes (ridge buttes to southeast, 23.7 miles)
Quarry (northwest, 2 to 4 miles)
Harney Peak (highest peak in southwest, 19.5 miles)
Storm Hill (below Harney, 9.7 miles)
Mount Calvary Cemetery (west, 0.3 miles)
The area of town around the cementery is especially beautiful
after a snowfall.
The cache is about a hundred feet away. Walk to the north end of
the parking lot and take the trail. It's in a small ammo can in a
pile of yellow sandstone.
