Split Rock Falls Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Cache-tech: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have had no contact with the cache owner since my last note and there has been no notes posted to the cache page in that time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache.
When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link (Mine) across the top and then click on this cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future. If you do not plan on replacing/repairing your cache, please CITO any remains returning the site to the original state before you placed your cache.

Thanks for your understanding,
Cache-tech

Geocache Description:

Here is a cache for those of you who are feeling a bit more adventurous. It is located at Split Rock Falls on Jewett's Creek. It is housed in an ammo. box (Thanks Sportsman) and contains a number of trading items as well as a cache sheet, log book, writing utensils, etc. It is a scenic little falls. Enjoy your visit!

I had never been to this falls prior to placing the cache. I am sure that some of you will find other ways to access the cache. I don't usually give detailed directions as I know that much of the challenge is figuring out how to get there, but this one may be difficult to locate for those of you without a map on your GPS or a mapping program on your computer. Here is one way to get there:

1. Turn off the TCH at the Kings Landing/Lake George exit. Travel south. After going under the underpass, turn left on the service road opposite the PetroCan Station.

2. A short distance down the service road for the new highway you will come to a old road. Turn right. At N45 51.444 W66 58.569 turn left. You will find a good place to park there, or if you wish, and don't care much about your paint job, you can proceed a bit further.(The road is growing in- don't take your Pony down here Red!) There is a good place to park/turn around at N45 51.354 W66 58.421.

3. You can walk, ski, use and A.T.V., snowmobile, or your G.A.V. to proceed from there. Resist the urge to follow your G.P.S. and take off cross country to the end of the road if you are on foot. It is further to walk but much easier going on the road.

4. At N45 50.713 W66 57.990, bear left at the "Y" in the road.

5. The road ends at N45 50.969 W66 57.870, a short time after you pass by an old beaver pond. You are now a bit more than 400 m from the falls and will have to go on foot from here. Head in the general direction, and for a bit you will be able to follow an old road. It is quite overgrown so you may have to use your imagination in places.

6. As you approach the creek, you will come to a very steep side hill. Watch your footing! If the water is high, stay on the same side of the creek and follow the high ground down stream until to come to a horse back where you can go directly down hill to the cache. Shortly before you get to the horse back, there is a high bluff, so be careful.

If the water is lower, it is easier to go down to the creek. Walk down it a short distance to the falls. Cross the creek just above it and again just below to get to the cache. There isn't much water here in the summer and I crossed easily by jumping from rock to rock.

After placing the cache, I found a path that took me to a ATC trail on the opposite side of the creek. (Ain't that always the way!) I followed it until I came to a fairly recent clear cut. You may find access from this direction. I plan to check it out at my first opportunity. There is a recent cutting operation on the north side of the creek as well that may provide access. Another option would be to walk or ski up the creek itself.
