Geocache Description:

This is a deliberately tricky cache, initially placed for the cachers attending 2005 Durham Event.

The cache is next to Ushaw College, the main centre in the north of England for the training of Roman Catholic priests. The original land was purchased in 1799 by Bishop Gibson and construction on the seminary began in 1804.

In 1568 a seminary was founded at Douai in France to supply catholic missionaries to England during a period of catholic repression. In 1793 during the French revolution the college of Douai was seized and the occupants fled to England where they established a college at Tudhoe, moving later to Crook Hall (near Lanchester) and later Pontop Hall. In 1808 the college was finally established at its present site.

Several buildings were constructed between 1839 and 1893 including a library to house 45,000 books, infirmary, swimming pool, playground, cloisters, oratory and chapels. In 1817 a windmill was built to provide flour for the occupants of the college. On New Year’s Day 1853, a fierce wind blew off the sails and decapitated the mill – the remains can still be seen in the little row of houses to the North West.

Ushaw College is the home to a number of important historical possessions including a ring from St Cuthbert’s tomb, which may be worn by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle on special occasions.

The college is also known for a unique brand of squash called Cat (or Katt) which was originally played at the college of Douai - you can see the towering walls of the court from near the cache site. There is a public footpath running through the centre of the college grounds so you can have a look at some of the impressive buildings.

This cache is not hidden behind rocks or under twigs, it's in plain sight
The best tactic for finding it is just to look for something that's not quite right.

DiscoTM

Although this is a micro, it is also a disco cache (meaning disguised container). The actual outer container is approximately 10cm x 6cm.
Other cache in the disco range are:
Husky
Steely Dee

Important - Please Note:

The cache container must not and cannot be picked up. The logbook can be easily retrieved with a little care without disturbing the container.

You will need to bring your own pencil as there is none in the cache.

If you do get a DNF, please remember to log it as it helps to alert us when the cache needs to be checked in addition to the regular maintenance.
