Geocache Description:

A few Hours spent exploring part of the old Warragul to Noojee railway station sites.

The Warragul to Noojee Railway was opened in 4 stages between 1890 and 1919 to enable the produce and timber from this fertile region to reach the lucrative Melbourne markets. This cache trail takes us past the stations of this long retired railway. The railway was, in most cases, the only mode of transport for the selectors trying to farm small clearings amongst the tall forest timbers. Those forests have all given way to the lush pastures of to-day. When the second stage of the railway from Rokeby to Neerim South was opened in 1892 The Age sent a reporter to investigate the huge sums of money spent on this tiny branch line. Our staring point is
38’ 09.940 145’ 56.212 This is 20 meters from where the branch line left the main line on its way north. The newly opened underpass has obliterated any remanants of the original line.. Head off North to the first Station at
38’ 07.723
145’ 57.148
looking south you can see the earthworks for the Lillico Station which had a 57 foot platform with a dead end siding. The Age reported “ The first station some 3 miles distant from Warragul has had vast amounts of money splashed upon it, the entire way a post and 3 rail fence accompanies the line to this small station.”. The original Station Masters House can be seen to the right of the cutting, it has been added to over the years. The number of words between the arrows = C and the number of letters between the arrows multiplied by two = DD. Keep heading North to
38’ 05.8C8
145’ 56. (2DD-2).
The Buln Buln station was 50 meters east of here. It boasted a 100 foot long platform, Goods shed and a loop siding. A set of 7 vertical numbers is visible here use first 6 only numbers 123 = EEE and 456 = FFF. So onward to
38’ 04 . (713+ EEE)
145’ 55 (FFF-515)
Here you are on the approach to Bravington station also known as Muddy Creek. You can make out the raised platform area (57 foot long) about 50 meters NW from here. With a loop siding. The station was the scene of a boiler explosion during construction in which several of the navvies were killed. There are 3 numbers here G H & I (top to bottom). Move along to
38’ 04. GG ((G+H)x2)
145’ 55. 50(I)
Rokeby Station also known for a while as Tarrego and then Jindivick Station was the terminus for the first section of the line in 1890. The 144 foot platform earth structure is clearly visible 50meters SE from here. There was a crane and a high stock ramp beside the loop siding as well as works and wayside island. There are 3 sets of numbers in the high circle J= 1 number, KK = 2 numbers and LLLL = 4 numbers. Your second last destination for this tour is
3J’ 03 .((JxKK)-607)
145’ 57 .(LLLL-1036)
There are two sets of numbers here 123=MMM and 456=NNN. Walk to the RHS and marvel at the depth of the cutting. The local paper the Warragul Guardian of March 22nd 1892 under an article headed “Useless Expenditure” said “looking into the cost of construction, one must be forcibly struck with the waste of money upon this line in more than one instance. Let us take for example the costly bridge over the big cutting, the cost of which could not possibly be under 1000 pounds, and yet it never will be used.”. move along to the caches final resting place
38’ 02. (MMM+181)
145’ 58. (NNN+48)
The Age reporter in 1892 described this station “being set in a clearing, surly as vast an expanse as the Melbourne Cricket Ground and whose surface is as clear and as level as that mighty playing arena”. The station situated 11 miles and 622 feet from Warragul had a 200 foot platform which is still clearly visible today. There was a loop siding and a shelter building upon the platform.

Cache has been reset May2007 after being muggled
