Our Fair City's Less Dirty Magazine Cache In Trash Out® Event

This cache has been archived.

Johann Panholtz: Cool!

I'm archiving at the moment so I don't confuse any more geocachers that this event is still available.

The castle is "undisturbed" by the construction next door (although it doesn't feel so out in the woods).

Work to get city to haul stuff away is still on-going between the Gypsies and myself. I go occassionally at lunch just to pick up the latest refuse since people dump stuff and throw their lunch trash out.

The plant growth looks like it will be held in check until spring by our cooler temperatures / fall weather.

If I do find out more about the future of this site, I'll post it here.

Cheers, Johann Panholtz

Geocache Description:

WORK! Work hard and save the castle! The Savannah Powder Magazine is in need of some tender loving care and a good trash pickup and vegetation beat-down to preserve the historic nature of a truly unique part of our history.

Update on 25 Jul: Details are getting more specific all the time, but here are my working notes. Please check back regularly for more updates. Email your caching buddies, bring your neighbor, etc. I choose a couple of weeks after the August 13th GGA meeting and I did not see any other "geocaching" conflicts. I know I won't be able to catch everybody, but how about the 27th of August???

Update on 19 Jul: If you want to see how the last one turned out, see GCP8BF. Didn't the shower afterwards feel great!?!?!

------------------------------------------------------

Who? Willing and able geocachers looking to do some grassroots civic action to maintain the cleanliness of this site. Just like the crew last time, only we need MORE (see GC for what it was like last time)

What? CITO event. See web link above for what that means exactly. We hope to finish clearing around the building itself and start picking up trash farther back in the woods.

When? Saturday, August 27th - Morning worked best last time since it will only get hotter; 0800 until 1200 or until your body passes out. Luckily we won't be competing with a Harry Potter release this time ( to steeladdicted)

Where? At or near posted coordinates; The Savannah Powder Magazine is located on Highway 17 between Subway (same side) and Chatham Parkway. The only other current indicator is the telephone pole with an orange "X." Look for a grass road going into the woods.

Why? It's just the right thing to do. The good historic stuff is not confined to just downtown.

What to bring?

EVERYONE: Gloves, water, insect repellant, fresh musles

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: (looking for volunteers)

1) Limb Saw (Newmarch?) - to take out those two pesking limbs in front dropping leaves on top providing material for vines/weeds to grow in
2) Extension ladder (???) - to get on top of building to pull weeds and vines (we must be careful not to fall off or through the roof)
3) Truck or wagon (???) - to haul trash from farther back up to the road and/or dumpster
4) Water Jugs for handwash station (Johann Panholtz for one 5 gal jug, others?) - it would have been nice last time
5) Some trash bags (Johann Panholtz) - we didn't use many last time, but I expect we will need more as we scour the woods and ravine
6) World Famous GORP (Johann Panholtz) - a cacher's got to eat!!!
7) Spare water bottles (Johann Panholtz) - I still have some left
8) Big dumpster (Tommy Holland?) - much easier than hauling to curb or to the dump itself
9) What else???

We are still working through details of trash containment and hauling, but I hope for another conainter from the city (boy, that was great).

in faith, Johann Panholtz
