Long Island of the Holston Cache II Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

vhasler: Time for this one to go to the history books. I am changing the cache container and possibly size, so let's consider the new placement a refreshment of this area. The swinging bridge is still closed, so will be the timing of when I get the new cache in place. If someone get the spot before I do, then its a chance at a find.

Geocache Description:

Resurrection of an early Kingsport cache

A cache (GCGC3W) was hidden near this site on 6/28/2003 by AD Morris, who has since moved to Virginia (and dropped out of geocaching?). It was shut down in late 2003 due to the construction of the new baseball fields and repairs to the swinging bridge. While reviewing my finds after hitting #500, I realized that the area was open again.

This cache is located on Long Island of the Holston, In Kingsport, Tennessee, which is Tennessee's first National Historic Landmark. To get to the cache, there are several parking options, with the closest parking at N36 33.012 W082 35.361. You can swim, boat or hike to the island from there - Hiking is recommended. It is only about 0.39 miles hiking to the cache spot from the parking area via a fun swinging bridge. If you swim, it is only about 280 feet. There are ducks and geese around.

The original cache site is now a jumble of kudzu vines. It is a regular sized cache in my normal mode operandi. I have learned recently (in 2005) that Texas has cacti, while we have PI of which some is there.

While you are getting this one, check out the starting point for First Cache Kingsport (GCGA05) placed by YukonMike which was placed 6/16/2003 (til then the closest one was in Johnson City). Reading the logs for the original Long Island cache is like a history book of early adopters of geocaching… MtnTreker, Kptcacheman, Rocky Road and Annie, but unfortunately closed before DMFlyer got to it. I see also in a log that I asked about creating an informal geocaching group in the area – which is now the active TriCities or State of Franklin Geocachers.

4/6/07 Update - For those of you who make sure the cache is concealed - thanks! For those who immediately head back to the car - shame.
