Geocache Description:

Many thanks to JNJ Walla for the clever microcache hiding spot, which we got at Mrs. Captain Picard’s “When is a Film Canister NOT Just a Film Canister” event in June.

Many Austinites learned to play at the site of this cache. I know I did, and I hear Ben Crenshaw used to come here as a kid too. If you think golf is only for the country club set, then you need to meet the most diverse group of dedicated golfers at this cache’s location.

This site was originally the property of Butler Brick. The city took over the land when the brick company ceased operations (they had dug up all the clay they could), abandoned the property, and did not pay their taxes on the land. The place became a dumping ground for junk until Winston Kinser asked the city to let him turn it into a golf course and manage the property as a concession. The course opened in 1950 and has been run by the Kinser family since. It is the only public golf course in Austin that is not subsidized by city taxes.

You don't have to golf to find the cache. If you do like to golf, this is a nine hole, par 3 course and the greens fees are very reasonable. The longest hole is 118 yards, and the shortest is 61. Bring your own clubs or rent them there. The only rule is you have to have at least two clubs, one of them being a putter. They also have golf balls for sale; many of them were fished out of the one water hole on the course.

The course is open year round from 9:00am till dusk (M-F) and 8:30am till dusk (Sat-Sun). The cache can be found at any time, but do be aware of the park's curfew between 10:00pm and 5:00am.

Should you happen to get a hole in one on the golf course, let them know in the clubhouse. Your name will be enshrined with hundreds of others in black marker on the wall. If you find the “Hole In One For A Birdie,” just log your find (bring your own pencil). It’s only a micro; no room to trade stuff.

You will not need to wander onto the course to find this cache. If you happen to be led onto the course by your GPS and you hear a shout in the distance that sounds like "FORE!" then you are advised to duck.
