GWR and the Romans One (Wiltshire) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RedCableTie: I went to check the cache following discostu321's Did-Not-Find - and have decided to archive both of the GWR and the Romans caches.

These have been my most troublesome caches. #1 has now had its tree cut down twice - on both occasions the cache box was found nestling in the horizontal tree. I found #2 with its box open and the contents strewn across the ground - for the second time. So, I think after 4+ years these caches have had their day and I will archive both of them and let someone else use the area as it is good caching country.

Geocache Description:

The Severn Tunnel opened in 1886, but trains from London to South Wales still had to make the convoluted journey through Chippenham, Bath and Bristol to reach the tunnel. So, in 1897 the GWR decided to build the Badminton cut-off to allow trains to take a more direct route between Wootton Bassett and Patchway (close to modern-day Bristol Parkway station). The new line cost £986,084 5s 2d, opened in 1903 and included a crossing of the Fosse Way Roman road - the two "GWR and the Romans" geo-caches are on a byway, one end of which is at this crossing point.

Park at N 51 33.349 W 02 12.495 (ST 85660 84130), which is at the far end of the byway from the GWR/Fosse Way crossing, and head south along the byway.

If you walk to the far, GWR/Fosse Way crossing, end of the byway (about 1 mile each way) there is a bridge that takes the Fosse Way over the railway line and offers good views of the passing trains. There is parking for one car (two if both are carefully parked) at this end of the byway at N 51 32.696 W 02 11.981 (ST 86251 82917), allowing the two geo-caches to be done in reverse order.

Please take care of the fast moving traffic at the GWR/Fosse Way crossing end of the byway - although the traffic is not heavy, many modern drivers take advantage of the straightness of the roman road to drive very fast.
