Geocache Description:

This is number twenty-one in a series of historical points within Douglas County Colorado.
Okay, so maybe a little tongue in cheek.

On September 28, 1998, A rock-hound in Douglas County was startled to find he was being observed

The rock-hound, a 32-year-old software engineer, was rock hounding on Forest Road 320 in Long Hollow in Douglas County, Colorado between 6 and 7 am when the incident occurred.

He stated that he had been working the site looking for rocks for about 45 min and was about 100 feet south of his car, which was out of sight around the outcrop. When he walked back to his car the windshield wipers were flipped over, rubber side out.

He then began looking around, scanning the tree line (about 40 feet away from where the car was parked). Just inside the woods, he saw the silhouette of a black bear looking at him. He walked slowly (15 or 20 feet) to the driver's side of his car watching the "bear." It was about 20 feet on the other side of the car and in the woods watching.

He got into the car, still watching the "bear" in the woods. As soon as he slammed the car door it stood up and appeared to be 7 to 8 feet tall. It looked like a large, dark man covered in black fur. That was when he realized it was not a bear. It ran south, still in the trees, and over the top of the quartz outcrop/mound. He saw it running for about 3 seconds before it was over the top of the mound. It took it about 6 seconds for it to move from sitting/crouching to out of sight.

He started the car and drove away quickly and didn't stop until the McDonalds in Woodland Park where he flipped the windshield wipers over.

In thinking back, he said that it appeared that the creature was just curious. However, the rock-hound was not.

The total time watching was about 2 min, from the first sight of the "bear" in the woods until it was over the top and out of sight.

Make sure that you take your camera.

NOTE: 07/06/16 Sadly, this area has changed a lot. The quartz canyon has been bulldozed in. The area of the cache had changed so much that I didn't look for the container, just replaced it. To get to the cache, drive until the road is blocked by large quartz rocks and park there. One rock might still have three black bars on it. Walk past the rocks on the road until GZ is about 150 feet, uphill, and start the climb. I am posting a photo of the cache site.

Thanks Geocaching Colorado for the Geocache of the Month Award, as the second series to win!
