This cache has been hidden in memory of Trevor Lloyd Sugars (4th April 1948 – 19th February 1998) – The geocacher who never cached.
Trevor was a man who loved many things, but few as much as gliding. I don’t ever remember him not gliding! His dedication to his sport ensured that his home club, the RAAF Richmond Gliding Club, always had healthy numbers and well maintained facilities and aircraft. As an instructor Trevor was able to pass his knowledge and passion on to other keen young students in the hope that one day they would take that first solo flight and gain their certification as a glider pilot. The club have recently renovated the Blanik, which is the main instruction glider, and have painted his name where he used to sit while instructing.
As a member of the RAAF Richmond Gliding Club, Trevor was a strong competitor in the annual Interservice Gliding Competition where pilots from the RAAF, Army, Navy and Police Forces all competed for the satisfaction of being better than the other services. The Narromine Aerodrome was one of the many locations the Interservice competition was held. With Narromine being so close to family, it was also a place where he spent a lot of flying and crewing time. Growing up as children of a glider fanatic, the 1st Lady and The Sugarman, also spent many childhood hours playing in this area.
When not gliding metal or fibreglass birds through the sky, Trevor loved the outdoor aspects of his RAAF training – walking through the bush with a map, compass and pack. One of his biggest achievements was completing the Kokoda Trail with other servicemen and women as a memorial to those who served and died at war. His love of the outdoors and adventure, combined with a cunning, sly mind, were the perfect ingredients for a fairly sneaky geocacher. I’m certain, had he been alive to participte in geoaching, it would have become the next best thing to gliding!
Narromine is considered the best gliding area in Australia and one of the three best in the world. Pilots from around the world visit Narromine every year, and the State & National Gliding Championships are held here on a regular basis. Narromine’s rich aviation history has resulted in the opening of the Narromine Aviation Museum.
The Narromine aerodrome, constructed after World War I, is home to the oldest country aero club in Australia. Over 2000 pilots lived and trained in Narromine during World War II. Visitors have included Charles Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm, Chuck Yeager and Nancy Bird Walton. It was used as a training station for pilots in World War II.
More recently the Narrmone Aerodrome was the site of the first flight of the Wright Brothers replica. Moon walker Buz Aldrin made the journey out to Narromine for the event and joined locals in celebrating the 'Spirit of Flight'.
