Geocache Description:

This is a very safe site to visit with family members. One gets the unusual view from the top of the hoodoos looking down to the valley floor and the St. Mary’s River. The parking and viewing area is fenced to prevent people getting closer to the edge of the precipices. It still allows a close-up look at the materials of the hoodoos.

Hoodoos are columns, pinnacles, or pillars of rock typically produced by differentially weathering and erosion of horizontal strata. Thus, while the material surrounding the hoodoo is washed away by direct rainfall and surface erosion the hoodoo stands as a small to large tower. They generally occur adjacent to steep slopes and are effectively remnants of the steep slope as it is being eroded back. Frost and freezing will also play a big part in this erosion process. As water seeps into the rock cracks, and expands as it freezes, further pieces of rock will be split off to arrive sliding to the valley floor. Hoodoos are thus erosional remnants of mainly sedimentary rocks, usually plateau sedimentaries, that have eroded into weird shapes. At many sites the local first nation tribes have stories that will relate to the formation of these geomorphologic formations, especially those that approximate a human form. At this site one can easily get a close-up look the makeup of these hoodoo pillars. Several rocks and boulders of various sizes still remain trapped in location in the columns. The loose broken-off remnants of the slope can be seen as they are slowly being moved, by weather, to the valley bottom.

To log this site you will need to enter the date of your visit in the log below. You then need to send me an email that tells me what natural object is about 10 metres OUTSIDE of the fence when you stand at N49 35.326 W115 48.901. Without me receiving this bit of information your log entry will be deleted.
