Stor-Ofsen
Ved Ringebu i Gudbrandsdalen er det reist en minnestein om flom
katastrofer som har rammet Gudbrandsdalen. Denne er plassert ved en
flott anlagt rasteplass langs E6, vannet stod 90 cm over dagens vegbane.
Litt historikk:
21. Juli 1789. Stor-Ofsen. Som berørte mesteparten av Østlandet
17. Juni 1860 Storflom i Gudbrandsdalen.
31. August 1938 Den tredje største flommen i Gudbrandsdalen.
03. Juni 1995. Vesle-Ofsen. Storflom i Gudbrandsdalen og Østlandet.
Flommen i 1938 hadde faktisk 35 cm høyere vann nivå ved Ringebu (Losna)
enn i 1995, men totalt sett var omfanget av 1995 flommen betydelig større
i nedre del av dalen. Til sammen ble det gjort skader for 1,8 milliarder kroner.

At Ringebu in Gudbrandsdalen you will find a historical memorial stone to
the flood disasters over the last 225 years.
It is located on a nicely arranged resting area for travellers going north or south
on the E6 through Gudbrandsdalen.
To let you see how high the water was at the largest of the floods “Stor-Ofsen”
the water stood 3 feet over todays road surface.
Some historical facts:
July 21 1789 Stor-Ofsen. The largest flood ever in Norway.
June 17 1860. Large flooding in Gudbrandsdalen.
August 31 1938. Third largest flooding in Gudbrandsdalen.
June 3. 1995. Vesle-Ofsen. Second largest flooding in Norways history.
Most of this accidents happened when the snow melting increases to much
combined with rain and high temperatures.
The water level was actually 35 cm higher at Ringebu (Losna) in 1938
than in 1995 but it increased further down the valley.
Some experts say that the damages would have been much higher if it
wasn’t for our modern technology where they can adjust the amount of
water kept in the reservoir for the winter supply of water to our hydropower
plants.
The total damages was estimated to 1,8 billion kroner in 1995.
