Near an overlook point that provides vistas of the Hell's Kitchen Area of Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties. Elev. 5945'
This cache is located 350 feet in elevation above the confluence of Highland Creek and the north fork of the Stanislaus River. Just upstream on the Stanislaus is a swimming area our family and others have always called "Sliding Rock." You can slide on your rear down a cascade into the deep swimming hole. The cascades upstream warm the water somewhat.
THIS CACHE IS ONLY AVAILABLE MAY THROUGH OCTOBER OR SO. Check Conditions before hunting for it.
If you get "Erratica" (GCKM3K) up on Highway 4 you will be close. You need to go down the road to BSA's Camp Wolfeboro, toward Sand Flat on the Stanislaus--4WD or high clearance vehicle is recommended. The road is just east of the Big Meadow Campground at N38d 25.064m, W120d 06.177m. If you can drive all the way, go down to the campground at Sand Flat and overland it from there. The river is nice there. If you have to hoof it, you can take a short cut from a meadow at N38d 24.589m, W120d 05.373m. There is no real trail. Keep to the high flat, dry areas. Don't get below the cliff or you'll have to back-track, unless you bring climbing gear.
Wear good shoes and carry water, GPSr, compass and a topo--this will take 1-2 hours, depending on how close you get with a vehicle.
The cache is not at the highest point, nor is it right at the overlook--we didn't want it washed over the cliff. It is in a barren spot, in a crack in rocks. Look for the typical out-of-place rock pile. There is a dead tree about 30' uphill from it. It is 4.5" x 15" black ABS sewer pipe with a clean-out plug. Please screw the plug back tightly.
Original swag included 2 decks of cards, a stop-watch, a 1927 buffalo nickel, 2 small knives, some Cutter wipes, a tiny beer mug, and some other trinkets.
Have fun and enjoy the views and the wildlife. If you have time, hike down the backside of the knoll and towards the river--you will find a trail to Sliding Rock -- Jump in!
