Geocache Description:

Located in one, if not the, best maintained parks I have visited - Historic Basto Village. Although they declare a $5 parking fee, and a $2 entrance fee, when asked they said not necessary. I suggest you make a donation if you find it enjoyable. It is within Wharton State Forest.

Please follow the instructions to log this cache. If I don't receive a email or message per the instructions below, your log will be regrettably deleted.

Bog Iron (Limonite) comes from the sands of the Pinelands. It is seldom visible because it occurs underwater along the edges of bogs in the Pineland. Look nearby for a Ore Boat. The museum has very good displays talking Bog Iron and related topics.

Bog iron derives from ferric oxides that occur in the iron-rich clays underlying much of New Jersey's Outer Coastal Plan. Waters laden with organic acids from decaying vegetation percolate down to these layers, leaching out the soluble iron and carrying it to the surface. Deposited along river banks and in swamps, this iron ore was mined and smelted for a full century from the 1760's to the 1860's.

To claim this cache, upload a photo of one of you or your group in front of the pile of Bog Iron. If you don't want to be in the picture take a picture of your phone or GPS with the bog iron in the picture. Also email/send a message through geocaching.com to cache owner with a description of where you found it.
