A short hike to the site of Palmerlee. Distance 1.25 km from the TH.
Trail erosion after the Monument fire has made the trail difficult.
Follow Miller Canyon Rd (FR 56) to the end. Some dirt road, 2WD ok. The Miller canyon trailhead is on the north side of the parking area. Please do not tresspass on the private property. The Miller canyon trail (#106) climbs around the private property, then goes up-canyon on an old road. The cache is located in the bottom of the canyon under heavy tree cover. Be prepared to spend some time searching for this cache.
Palmerlee was active from 1904 to 1911. There was a lumbermill, repair shop, boarding house, tollroad, and a post office. Today all that remains, are some rock retaining walls used to form terraces for the structures that once were here.
The saga of the wandering post office. The Reef Post Office was established on Jan 7, 1901 at the Reef mining camp located at the top of Carr Canyon. On Dec 7, 1904 it was moved to the home of Joseph Palmerlee in Miller Canyon. It remained there until April 12, 1911 when it was moved to the nearby community of Garces. It was discontinued on May 24, 1926.
The cache is a ammo box.
