TONOPAH JUNCTION Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Tonopah Junction was first created as a wagon road from a terminal at this location, on the old narrow gauge Carson Colorado railroad, for hauling badly needed supplies and equipment to the new, booming town of Tonopah. Shortly thereafter, a narrow gauge railroad was built from this point. When Southern Pacific changed the line from a narrow gauge track (3 ft. on center) to a standard track (4’8 1/2”) from Mound House to Mina a third rail was added to enable both narrow and standard traffic . The narrow gauge line continued, however, on to Candelaria and down into Owens Valley. Rusty spikes can still be found, which may be reduced to the size of a pencil from the sun and elements for the past century.
The area is soft , brushy and sandy so we would advise walking in if coming from Highway 95 ( approx 1/3 mile, and you will have to go through a fence), or if coming from Highway 360, a 4WD or Quad would be advisable. If selecting this way, go to the Rock House and then your on your own. If you are a railroad history buff, this is a place you will want to see. Please don’t pack anything off (but debris) and leave things for your great grand children to see. Cache has been changed to an ammo can and filled with the usual trade goodies, a log book and pencil and a Susan B for first to find.
Please be sure to hide as well as you can and enjoy looking around the area.
