Geocache Description:

Spenard used to be a community of its own, with its own post office and separate big name on highway atlas maps – and then as now, it had its own slightly odd residents.

Sometime back in the 1930s, an old hermit lived along the banks of Fish Creek in a part of Spenard that’s still funky, narrow, and hermit-like today (check out his story on the city park dept's website!) There’s a pretty nice little park with neat playground equipment and tidy flowerbeds to memorialize the old hermit, but oddly enough there’s nowhere to park for over a hundred yards in any direction! So, even the park is a bit of a ‘hermit’ today, continuing the old hermit’s tradition of being hard to access. The only parking I found nearby is at N61 11.559 W149 55.554 (but you can park on the street near the park entrance if you're careful not to block driveways); pay attention to signs regulating parking and other activities around this area – the local hermits might just tow you away if you don’t! As you would expect, the old hermit lived in a swale in the cityscape where even satellites have a hard time being seen – so the cache coordinates have a normally unacceptable average accuracy rating of 26.5 feet. I kept losing satellite signal at the cache hide point! The hint gives you good pointers if your GPSr takes a tumble here too.

DO NOT APPROACH FROM THE WEST - THE RAILROAD TRACKS ARE NOT TO BE CROSSED ANYWHERE IN THIS AREA - TRAINS MOVE AT HIGH SPEED. YOU ARE LIABLE FOR TRESPASS CHARGES IF YOU DISOBEY THE POSTED SIGNS AND CROSS TRACKAGE IN THIS AREA!

This is an area where Fish Creek retains some of its natural vitality and can be seen as more than a drainage ditch or underground creek. The decon container is located very close to the south edge of the streambank, hidden at ground level.

This is the third of four caches tracing Fish Creek’s meanderings across our cityscape.
