The cache is located on Hemlock Island in the Clarion River.
The microcache is a small tupperware container and is located on Hemlock Island in the Clarion River. My Garmin Topographical maps have Hemlock Island labeled; however, it looks like nothing more than a rock in the middle of the river. The truth is this island is HUGE! It is 0.35 miles long and is covered with large trees. This is a beautiful location to spend the day. Bring a picnic, a book, and your swimming suits and spend some hours here. The island is located downriver from Cooksburg so it is very secluded and quiet.
To get to the island I suggest departing from the Firetower and following the River Trail most of the way there. It is approximately 0.85 miles from the firetower and involves a lot of downhill hiking to get there and then, of course, the requesite water hazard. Hemlock Island stays above water level throughout the year but please use common sense and don't attempt this cache if the river is in flood stage...Duh. The Clarion River is very easy to ford. Most of the time the river depth only comes up to my ankles from the river shore all the way over to the island. At the deepest point, at times, it reaches my knees. I have included a photo of my 9 and 10 year old boys wading across the river so that you can see how easy it is to cross.
We love spending the afternoon here. I can sit and read on the island while the kids splash and play in the river the whole way around the island. If it gets too hot you can look back across the river and see where Henry Run leads into the Clarion River, via a small waterfall. Below the waterfall is a small dam and swimming hole. A quick dip here will cool you off as it is spring water! I have included pictures of this area as well.
This cache has been muggled already so I have replaced it with a microcache to help prevent this from happening again in the future. Please be sure that you hide the container at least as well as you found it.
