Geocache Description:

One of a set of multi-caches encompassing several villages along the River Witham in South Western Lincolnshire

The above co-ordinates will lead you to the parking area at the Bassingham Village Hall and School car park. The clues are all within walking distance.

Bassingham is one of the eight villages that form the Withamside United parish and has been populated continually since the Angles based themselves here in the late 5th Century. The ownership of the manor of Bassingham has changed many times, from the Earl of Huntingdon to Morcar, the one time Earl of Northumbria before settling with the de Bassingeham family who eventually gave way to the Countess of Warwick amongst others.

1. Take the final two Roman numerals from the date above the door of the Chapel at 53 07.761N 000 38.349W, convert them to one Arabic numeral and place it area A in the cache co-ordinate.

You might want to visit the Heritage Room next door to get a copy of the village walk notes and map which may help you as you wander round looking at buildings!

2. Add the number of Martins to the number of Shiles involved in brick carving on the wall next to the Bull at 53 07.634N 000 38.592W and place the number in area B in the cache co-ordinate.

The Bassingham Parish Bull was an institution, which ran for several hundred years until about 1853 whereby a Bull was kept by the Parish, grazing on two dedicated fields. The rent for these fields yielded money for village charities.

3. Visit the churchyard of St. Michael at 53 07.614N 000 38.675W and find out how many years into the 19th Century did John Storr die? Take this number, subtract 4 and place it into area CC in the cache co-ordinate.

The Saxon village church, documented in the Domesday Book, was rebuilt following the Norman Invasion and again in 1783 when the main tower fell down. Take some time to explore the architecture here as Walt Disney, during a visit in 1949 to ‘trace his ancestors’, is alleged to have based the cartoon character Pluto on one of the church gargoyles. Some interesting photographs of this auspicious visit can be found in the pub in the neighbouring village of Norton Disney (53 07.309N 000 40.504W)

4. What is the number of the cottage that is an unwelcome addition to your lawn at 53 07.674N 000 38.553W? Place this number in area DD in the cache co-ordinate.

Turn left at the red bin and walk past the Cache at the co-ordinate:

53 07.ADD N 000 38.BCC

You may want to continue along the footpath to the road, turn right and re-enter the village via either the first or second right turn to complete the walk back to your car. Both of the pubs are recommended!

If you are feeling energetic and in need of a greater challenge, you can attempt to complete Withamside Jump from here. From the cache, turn left at the road, over the bridge and enter the footpath which is 350 yds on your right. This will eventually bring you to the road which you can follow for just under half a mile to get to waypoint 2 of Withamside Jump and decide your own route from there!

Please replace the cache securely once found.
