INDIANA
SPIRIT QUEST
The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches
will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by
Hoosier Pioneers. In just over a year, the quest has grown to over
a hundred eighty caches hidden in twenty-one Indiana counties, and
the hiders have grown to six cacher teams, all of which are
comprised of A Man and His Dog.... Over
530 cacher teams have logged over 6,000 finds. One cache machine
found 102 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours
only).
Welcome to Rice Cemetery
, Elkhart Indiana
The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, originally located
at Main and Tyler Streets north of the railroad tracks,
was dedicated on August 23, 1889. Silas Baldwin donated
the monument to the city in memory of the brave soldiers,
including his son, and sailors who served in the Civil
War. Lt. Frank Baldwin died in action during the Civil
War battle of Stone River in December of 1862.
The inscriptions are quotes from a number of historical figures.
Abraham Lincoln ("With malice toward none, with charity for all to
bind up the Nations's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne
the battle and for his widow and his orphan.") and James A.
Garfield ("God reigns and the government at Washington still
lives.") are inscribed on the east side, Ulysses S. Grant ("Let us
have peace. Soldiers of the United States your marches, sieges and
battles, in distance, duration, resolution and brilliancy of
results, dim the lustre of the World's past military
achievements.") on the west, Oliver Morton ("We are many states,
but one people, having one government, one flag and one common
destiny.") and John A. Logan ("The American citizen soldier, brave
in war, eminent as a statesman, admirable as a citizen.") are on
the south side, while the north side thanks the donor ("Erected by
Silas Baldwin in honor of the heroes who fought and the martyrs who
fell in the war of 1861-1865."). The monument remained at the site
of its dedication until the Spring of 1928. An increase in
automobile traffic around that area raised concerns about the
hazard presented by the statue. When the city planned to resurface
Main Street, it was determined that the statue should be removed
and placed at Rice Cemetery where it stands today.
Here we found many many war hero's from all the wars ever fought
by US soldiers , and some hero's that were also firefighters and
police officers.
We even found Richard P Klopefenstein who was honored with a
Bronze Medal in WW2.
