Geocache Description:

Hidden in an urban setting, this small cache showcases a very interesting art installation in downtown Arlington.

About the park: Although artist-designed parks are now fairly common, Dark Star Park is one of the earliest examples and was the first one funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Artist Nancy Holt worked closely with the site architect to create an integrated environment responsive to its urban setting. Large spheres made from gunite sprayed over steel frames were designed to resemble fallen, extinguished stars.

One section of the park contains spheres and poles with shadow-images set in the ground. Each year on August 1, the day in 1860 when William Henry Ross acquired the land that became Rosslyn, the actual shadows align with the shadow-images at 9:32 am. The aligning of the shadows has developed a cult following in Arlington.

About the cache: This cache was hidden at 9:32 am, August 1st, 2005 in celebration of this fun and interesting park. The actual cache is a small painted-silver tupperware that contains a log and a stubbed pencil. There's room for small trade items or even a Travel Bug.

Located a couple blocks South of the Rosslyn Metro Station (Orange and Blue lines). Metered parking is available on surrounding streets, but there is free two-hour parking at N38 53.380 W77 04.280, behind the Iwo Jima memorial.

Sister cache to "Rainy Day Cache," which is also hidden in an Arlington County park that features fun, interactive sculpture.
