A short walk around Oundle collecting clues to a nearby cache.
Above co-ordinates are for convenient parking and not the cache location.
The walk to the final location does involve a few gates and narrow bridges, so is unfortunately not particularly buggy friendly (see alternative parking).
This cache takes you on a short circular journey around Oundle looking for clues in order to locate the final cache location, which is a short walk away.
The best place to start this cache is in the Co-op car park, which is free – maximum 2 hours, and can be found at:
N52°28.839 W000°27.921
All the clues and cache can be found within a short radius of this location.
The buildings near Clue 1 in the Market Place cause problems with GPS accuracy. So be prepared to hunt around a bit.
Clue 1. N52°28.852 W000°28.027 Doomsday is mentioned here, but when? 10A6 ~ 19A6
Clue 2. N52°28.866 W000°28.139 Mary Queen of Scots Ghost is said to walk the staircase here, but when was it built? 1B2B
update Sept 2010 - the sign has been repainted without a date, but it was built 277 years before the building next door.
Clue 3. N52°28.879 W000°28.135 David Clark made his mark here on this date - CDth June 1821.
Clue 4. N52°28.893 W000°28.051 Look at the time. Now find a date. 16E4.
Clue 5. N52°28.621 W000°28.015 You can park at this location or walk to it, it's not far. H was here, and he left two numbers. F & F.
Now work out the location of the cache which can be found at:
N52° 28.C+F A-B-C C
W000° 28.F-E D D+E
- WARNING -
THE ROUTE TAKES YOU CLOSE TO WATER SO PLEASE TAKE EXTRA CARE WITH CHILDREN
and beware of nettles in the summer!!
Happy caching - please leave well hidden!
PLEASE NOTE – ALTERNATIVE PARKING
- If after working out the cache location you find the way ahead flooded, then an alternative route can be taken by parking at the following coordinates:-
N52° 28.C D-F A W000° 28.E A B
Find the footpath across the road next to the bridge and follow your arrow.
This route is also more suitable for buggies, with flat paths and one bridge which is wide enough to carry a buggy over.
August 2009 – cache moved slightly – coordinates and hint updated
May 2013 - After 7 1/2 years this ammo can has disappeared! Sorry it will have to be a small cache now.
July 2014 - This cache had always been hidden next to the old outdoor swimming pool which has now been fenced off. The cache has been moved a short distance away - coordinates and hint updated
