Geocache Description:

Failte!
HAAF #3 continues the series of caches on the old Hobbs Army Air Field, near Hobbs, NM

08-22-07 - the reclamation project has begun. The old drainage lagoons are being cleaned out. One large pile of dirt was bulldozed out to within literally 6 inches of the cache container. Half the bush it hid in was torn down, but they never saw the cache. I didn't realize my camo was that good!!

Anyway, this one is history. My thanks to all that visited and especially the ones that found one or more of the decoys and sent me such nice emails!

A very special thanks goes to Doug Lynch in Portales for "creating" stage one. He did a fantastic job. I won't say more because something like it may turn up again.

Slainte Mhath!!!

06-12-07 Update: The City has hired a firm to conduct additional testing of the ground around this cache prior to doing reclamation. It looks like some of the equipment arrived today. If there is ongoing activity, please pass on the cache.

03-05-07 Update: The City of Hobbs has approved a reclamation project for the area around this cache. At least the first stage will be impacted as the project cleans up old left-overs from the Army Air Force Base. I will keep the cache active as long as possible. However, if they sneak by me and start the project, do not try to work the cache. The cache will be moved to another location later. KK

08-03-06 Update: Sixty years this old base has been sitting out here rotting quietly away. Now that I put out a few geocaches, the City decides to "improve" the place. There is an enviromental survey taking place at the base and has been active very near this cache (like 4' from the second stage - which they didn't find). If survey work is in progress at the cache site, please pass this one by. KK

The HAAF series is designed to present you with a variety of caches requiring an increasing level of skill (or luck). HAAF #3 requires practicing skills that will become essential in completing HAAF # 5 (to be posted later).

HAAF #3 is a two stage cache. The final location is within easy walking distance of the initial stage and you don’t need to cross any fences to work this cache. The actual cache container is a 1/2 gallon jar painted to match the surroundings.

The coordinates shown above are for the first stage. Upon arrival there, you need to locate a series of numbers like these in the following sample format:
123-456

(The numbers you are seeking are not necessarily these particular numbers, however at least one of them does seem to be the correct number in the correct spot).

To find the coordinates for the actual cache, take the first three numbers in the series you find and use them as the final three digits in the N coordinate (Latitude). The last three numbers are the final three digits in the W coordinate (Longitude). All of the other numbers in the final coordinates are the same as the first stage.

A partial example using fictitious numbers: Pretend the N coords for the initial stage are 32 11.923 (not really, just an example). Once there, say you find the numeral series 123-456. To find the N Coords for the cache container, take 123 from the numbers you found and use them as the last three digits of the final coords to get
32 11.123.

Now then, you know what to do with the numbers to finish this cache. So, where do you find them? Well, that's the thing, isn't it?

Slainte Mhath & Good Luck!
