I was scouting locations to place a cache and I came across a benchmark. I figured I would go ahead and log this benchmark since I was right here, so I marked the coordinates and saved them for later on. When I was logged on to gc.com that evening, I was really surprised to see that the last time an official search was done for this BM, it was reported as "mark not found". According to all of the other reports, this BM is still in the original place and very much in view. I was the very first geocacher to log this one, as it had a question mark symbol (indicating an unknown status) by its designation on the BM page.
In order to find the cache, you must find this benchmark (BM) and log it. Go to the benchmark page and look up AK2788 which will give you the general coordinates. You should have no difficulty finding it once you arrive in the area. It is clearly marked and visible from a distance. There will be a 4 digit number - WXYZ - on the bottom of the BM. This is what you will use to find the cache.
Take the last 4 numbers of the North coordinates and subtract .XYZ from them.
Take the last 4 numbers of the West coordinates and replace Y.Z for the 5.9 section. Then take YZ + W and replace the final 99. No multiplication is involved in this step!
This will take you to the final cache.
To get credit for this cache, don't forget to log the benchmark here as well. You'll get a kind of "two for the price of one" for this cache as the benchmark will show up as a find in your user statistics.
