Geocache Description:

This geocaching event to be held at Big Springs Park in Cotter, Arkansas from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2005.

The geocaching booth was so popular last year that the Army Corps of Engineers has again invited geocachers to participate in this years JAKES activities so that even more area youth (and adults) may be introduced to geocaching as well as many other outdoor sports.
They felt that geocaching added a whole new dimension to what they were trying to introduce to the kids. And they loved the idea of CITO.

So we're again inviting all geocachers to come to this event and share your knowledge and help turn todays muggles into tomorrows' cachers! Bring your GPSr's - you may be called upon to demonstrate! And there are lots of new caches in the area to find while you're here - as well as meeting other cachers. The geocaching event does not have to end at 12:00 p.m. - we can visit all afternoon if we want, but the demonstrations will close at that time. That will leave lots of time for caching for you! A log book will be available at the geocaching booth for you to sign in and log the event

JAKES is the "Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship" sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation. We can't think of anything that is more in line with the geocaching ethics - knowledge (how much we've ALL learned since we've had our gpsr's), ethics/sportmanship (trade up, even or don't trade). Jake's and geocaching seem to go hand in hand.

Many local businesses and agencies will be represented at this gathering. Some of which are: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Arkansas State Parks, Arkansas Forestry Commission, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, National Park Service and many local law enforcement agencies.

A great many activities will be available for youths up to age 17. Some of these include: GPS and Map Reading, Geocaching, Field Survival, Tree Identification, Police K-9 Demonstration, Archery Shoot, B-B Gun Shoot, Instruction on Gun Handling and Safety, Boating and Water Safety. No fee will be charged this year for any of the events.

Our thanks to Ranger Scott Fryer and Ranger Michael Love of the Corps for inviting geocachers to this event and for encouraging the placement of geocaches on Corps property.

If you have any suggestions please feel free to email us or post online. We're not locked into anything and are open to all ideas! We'd like to put out several "temporary" caches for demonstration purposes so any input will be appreciated! And you're welcomed to place them yourselves on the day of the event as many of you geocachers have such innovative ideas and can show many different types of hiding techniques! We are currently setting these up to be loggable on gc.com and available for instructive purposes and for a morning of fun!

We're all invited to lunch afterwards at the pavillion at 12:00. The Corps will then draw for the prizes for the kids until 1:00 or so.

For those that would like to look up last years event it is: GCK9E5

Again - we'd like to thank the Army Corps of Engineers for their backing, approval and support of geocaching.

Camping Information: For those of you that will be camping while you're here, we have listed some of the nearby areas that provide campsites. Most are very limited as to how many spaces they will have available that weekend. We suggest you call for reservations.

White River Campground and Cottages -
This very nice area said they had plenty of space and could accomodate a large number of campers that weekend. They have tent camping with electricity, RV sites and cottages. Located just across the bridge from the event site.

This is an extremely popular camping spot and reservations are almost ALWAYS needed. They have 85 tent and RV campsites with water & electricity, 20 without hookups and a Rent-a-camp services for those without equipment. They told us that they have very few spaces available. This is about 15 miles from Mountain Home and 15/20 miles from Cotter. There are numerous caches to find in this area.
