This short walk is well sign-posted with somewhat rewarding views especially if commenced from the parking place in the woods.
The River Coquet, 40 miles in length, rises in the Cheviot Hills, flows northeast, and enters the North Sea at Amble. Coquet Island lies just off the mouth of the river. This series of caches will take you to some interesting places along the course of the river, always through terrific scenery.
Holystone is a tiny village sitting sleepily beside the Coquet. It was originally the site of a rather poor priory of Benedictine Nuns, although nothing of this complex remains today. These brides of Christ, however, once tended the famous holy well, a spring fed pool of pure Northumbrian water known as the Lady's Well, at the centre of which stands a Celtic style.
The clear pool lies silent amongst a small grove of trees, a very peaceful and atmospheric place today and it is difficult to imagine the crowds of pilgrims who must have come here in centuries past. It is sometimes called St. Paulinus' Well, for the Northern missionary baptised some 3,000 Northumbrians here in AD 627. It was previously St. Ninian's Well, so the earlier Scottish evangelist must have passed this way too.
