The Stonehouse to Nailsworth railway was a branch line off the Midland Railway (Bristol to Birmingham). The cutting of the first sod took place in Nailsworth on the 22nd February 1864 by the Rt Hon E Horsman MP in a meadow at Egypt Mill close to where the station was to be built. The line was eventually opened to goods traffic on the 1st February 1867 and to passengers on the 4th February in the same year, with the first train departing at 9.40am. The last train ran on the 16th June 1947 and this order was made by Government for the reduction in passenger mileage under the fuel economy campaign designed to help counteract the serious post war fuel shortage.

Take time to have a look at the bench placed by Nailsworth Friendly Circle 1945-1995. The inscription reads -
The kiss of the sun for pardon
The kiss of the sun for mirth
You are nearer to God's heart in the garden
Than anywhere else on earth
