Geocache Description:

Located in the Hop Brook Lake Recreation Area managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. This is a traditional cache located off a gravel trail system. During the summer there is an entrance fee of $4.00 per car.

Enter Hop Brook thru the main gate located on Route 63 in Middlebury, Connecticut. Park in the lot at the extreme north end of the lake (N41 31.164 W073 04.365). Go across the stream and up the Yellow Trail. This is a nice secondary growth hardwood forest. You can stay on trails until you get within 200 feet of the cache, then an easy bushwhack the rest of the way. Terrain is up hill most of the way but not too strenuous. Continue on the loop back down to the parking lot. Entire hike is about 1 mile round trip.

Cache is a traditional ammo can painted brown. First time finder prize is a U.S. Mint 2005 Coin Set.

Once at the park stay and enjoy this very well maintained recreation area. Opportunities for recreation at Hop Brook Lake include over seven miles of trails winding through woods and fields. Canoes, sailboards, and rowboats are welcome on the lake, however motor boats are not permitted. Fishing is also welcomed at Hop Brook Lake. The lake and its feeder streams are stocked with brown, brook, and rainbow trout. Bass and panfish are also found in the lake. Tables and grills are available for picnicking. Picnic shelters (4 sites) may be reserved for group use by contacting the Project Manager's office . The beach and swimming area are especially popular during the warm summer months.

During winter it’s a nice spot for cross country skiing but the cache could be buried in the snow. Be advised that during the winter you must park at the gate and walk or ski in to the trail head which will add another mile or so to the round trip.
