Geocache Description:

Just off Silver Mountain Road, not too long of a hike, with a great view.

This cache is named after the road and area it is in, which is Silver Mountain. It is an area that I would never have known about except when a friend of the family mentioned it.

The area has some great stonework with steps built right into the ground. This work was actually done in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps, who had a camp near by. President Franklin Roosevelt signed the bill creating the Civilian Conservation Corps on March 31, 1933 only 3 weeks after his inauguration. The plan was to put 500,000 unemployed youths to work in forests, parks, and range lands. This was a depression era program designed to provide young men between the ages of 18 and 25 with work and, at the same time, "regain lost forest land". (www.nps.gov) It is a great little piece of hidden history, and is neat to see.

Go south on Highway 16 and turn right on Silver Mountain Road, by Rockerville. Continue up the road and park at N 43* 56.973, W 103* 22.618. There is a trail that leads back and up with a great view at a lookout area. The cache container is a small green ammo box. Original contents of the cache include:
Logbook and Pencil
Disposable Camera (take a pic and leave in the cache)
$2 bill
Hotwheels car
Livestrong band
Rain poncho
American flag pin
South Dakota pheasant pin

This is the first cache I've placed, and I think its a great spot. Enjoy!
