These orienteering controls are metal plates about 14cm square and
painted blue and orange. They're fastened to trees, usually about
2m off the ground. Each control has a number in the top left and a
letter in the lower right.
You need to find the controls (and real orienteers would
sneer at you for using a GPSr but, then again, you don't have a
map!) and learn what those letters are.
Then use the following code to convert those letters into
numbers:
A=5, B=6, C=7, D=8, E=9, F=0, G=1, through to, Y=9, Z=0.
The coords of the controls are:
- Control Number Lat Lon
- 2 S31° 58.251 E116° 03.880
- 3 S31° 58.180 E116° 03.946
- 4 S31° 58.204 E116° 04.037
- 5 S31° 58.123 E116° 04.055
- 6 S31° 58.075 E116° 03.956
- 8 S31° 58.010 E116° 04.063
- 9 S31° 57.956 E116° 04.046
- 10 S31° 57.970 E116° 04.110
- 12 S31° 58.075 E116° 04.142
- 13 S31° 58.054 E116° 04.198
- 15 S31° 58.239 E116° 04.158
- 17 S31° 58.110 E116° 04.212
- 18 S31° 58.203 E116° 04.369
- 19 S31° 58.287 E116° 04.366
- 21 S31° 58.350 E116° 04.235
- 22 S31° 58.359 E116° 04.300
(These coords are available as a GPX file here. Save
the file, then open it in GSAK (or whatever other, inferior,
program you use) to transfer to your GPSr.)
Once you have the letters and corresponding numbers, you can
find the cache at:
S31° O3 O6 . O8 O4 O21 E116° O5 O17 . O18 O19 O22
(where e.g. "O2" is the number you get from the letter at the
control number 2)
The cache itself is an ammo can, hidden at the base of a rock.
It's a Muggle-popular spot, so please be careful to completely
cover the cache in the flat rocks that you should find on it!
The coords for the controls were not at all carefully taken, but
they're nailed onto trees in plain sight, so a few metres
inaccuracy shouldn't stop you! One of the controls has also been
burnt and is no longer painted, but the number and letter are still
legible.
Spare a thought for orienteers who generally find these controls
at a run! You have our permission to walk around the controls and
enjoy the scenery and birdsong.
