Park at the end of Panthorn trail (N41 37.936 W72 55.486). The
trail head is to the right of the large hedge and goes behind a
brown shed. I saw turkeys right at the entrance.
Follow the blue blazes as you head up the mountain. I am sure
this would be a dangerous hike with snow cover. The trail veers
left and then right and you will be at the cache site right before
you come to the end of the sky ride. The trail is difficult to
follow in parts so pay attention and use care.
There is a nice lookout point near the sky ride (N41 38.088 W72
55.895). I saw a pheasant and lots of wild blueberries near the
cache. The cache is not far off the trail so please rehide
well.
The name Lake Compounce is derived from John Compound, a
Mattatuck/Tunxis Native American Chieftain. On December 2, 1684,
Chief Compound, his squaw and several tribal members affixed their
waxed fingertip "marks" to a deed that conveyed the land and
"Compound's Lake" to a group of white settlers who had migrated to
central Connecticut from Massachusetts. Legend has it that shortly
thereafter, Chief Compound drowned in the lake while trying to
cross it in a large brass kettle.
The park's transformation tastefully integrates its natural
beauty and rich heritage with a blend of classic and contemporary
rides, live shows and unique attractions. A balance of change and
tradition continue to be important for the nation's first amusement
park.
I have many fond memories of growing up in the area and coming
to the park to ride the kiddie rides. I can still see the bright
lights of the little rides that went around in circles and the
buzzing sound of the cars. The Merry-Go-Round always seemed
impressive to ride. Bumber cars with their flashes of sparks. Skee
ball and Pokerino were fun too. The little train that went all the
way around the lake and through a tunnel was a must ride. I
remember the ballroom with lots of people eating and drinking beer
with bands performing. The Wildcat roller coaster always greeted us
with screams. Now I bring my children here and while it is not the
same it is still a fun family event for hopefully years to
come.
*** NOTE *** You can't get off the sky ride at the top although
it does provide the same great views.
