The junior
Ladybug Kids spent several weeks compiling goodies for kids of all
ages for this large ammo can cache. Then THEY selected
the hiding spot for the cache and collected the materials necessary
to hide the it. Mommy Ladybug and I shudder to think how well
they'll hide caches in just a couple of years. The cache also
contains a single-use camera. Please take a photo and leave
the camera in the cache for the next finder. The film will
later be developed and the images will be added to this cache
page.
A bonus to
this cache hunt is a visit to the Alaska Bird Observatory.
Step inside to learn about Alaska's wide variety of migratory
birds. The great room features mounted birds to help with
bird identification, interpretive displays, and a large selection
of adult and child bird books. Admire the hand-made tiles on
the Donor Wall as well.
Park at Creamer's Field
off College Road and walk one of the many trails to the cache or to
get to the nearest parking, turn onto Margaret Avenue off College
Road and follow the "Alaska Bird Observatory" signs from the
entrance of the Wedgewood Resort to parking at N64° 51.778, W147°
43.038. Once you've parked, find your way to the cache trail
by walking behind the observatory building and crossing the slough
on the foot bridge.
The summer hours for
the observatory building are 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through
Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
on Saturday and closed on Sunday. Hours are subject to change
without notice, so call 451-7159 for updated information. Be
sure to hit the festivities for the Annual Sandhill Crane Festival during the weekend of August, or one
of several other special events on the calendar. For more information about the Alaska Bird
Observatory's schedule of kid and adult programs, visit their
