KELLY ISLAND CACHE Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Kelly Island is located just north of the Oldtown bridge that crosses the Pend Oreille River.
Sometimes this island is called Boy Scout Island by the locals. However, the latest Topography maps refer to it as Kelly Island.
The island is heavily forested and should be accessed by some kind of a boat. THE CURRENT HERE IS VERY DECEPTIVE SO DON'T TRY SWIMMING OVER.
You can park and launch your boat from the boat launch on the southeastern side of the Oldtown bridge. This little area has plenty of parking as well as several historical information signs.
As you approach the island, there are surprisingly few good places to come a shore so pick your spot very carefully. I found the best landing to be along the southeastern edge of the island.
Once you get to the island, there are numerous trails and lots of neat places to explore. The final cache is in a steep area so proceed with care. It's not dangerous, but you will need to watch your footing more than your GPS.
The cache is in a large ammo box but is well concealed. Please make sure that it is covered and disguised well when you leave it. Lots of folks like to explore this island, and I don't want this one muggled.
