Geocache Description:

A scenic Drive to the 'end of the world'.

The River Coquet, 40 miles in length, rises in the Cheviot Hills, flows northeast, and enters the North Sea at Amble. Coquet Island lies just off the mouth of the river. nThis series of caches will take you to some interesting places along the course of the river, always through terrific scenery.

The source of the River Coquet, accessed via an extremely scenic drive, lies high up in the Cheviots, very close to an old Roman 'Camp' known locally as Makendon or Chew Green. The Medieval translation of Chew Green 'end of the world' certainly seems appropriate when used to describe this solitary place. It remains today as a large series of banked enclosures, 990ft square, adjoining the old Watling Street (known as Gamel's Path at this point) and the Pennine Way. A structure has been traced at the centre and, despite the general theory that it was an army camp, it has also been suggested it was a Roman religious enclosure. With the Coquet spring nearby, a temple to a River god or goddess would seem quite likely. If Gamel's Path is not closed for military training you can drive up the road to a point opposite the camp and see the outline of the camp more clearly. If Gamel's Path is accessible you can drive across to the A68 through some spectacular 360ºviews.
