SQ – “No Way, José” Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

BlackBrownDog: Work is being done in the cemetery, and it will look so nice when complete. Unfortunately the tree that hid this final stage had to go. Thanks for all who hunted.

Geocache Description:

The SQ in the cache name above signifies Spirit Quest, a project by the Northwest Ohio Geocachers to distinguish those caches that are set in cemeteries or memorial gardens. This cache is part of that series created by NWOGEO members to highlight cemeteries in the area. Please be respectful of the area, and observe the posted hours which are sunrise to sunset.

The first stage of this 2 stage multicache is a virtual in a park, accessible any time of day, the second stage is a container near but not in the state park, available daylight hours only.

In 1854 a Spanish merchant named Joseph (José) de Rivera St. Jurgo bought South Bass, Middle Bass, Sugar, Gibraltar, Ballast and Starve Island for a price of $44,000. He began to develop the islands building a saw mill in the fall of 1854. He had the county engineer survey the area in lots. In the first ten years, de Rivera sold 42 parcels of land in South and Middle Bass. He sold a quarter acre of land to the South Bass Board of Education for a dollar. St. Paul's Episcopal Church was built in 1865 on land donated by Joseph de Rivera. Mother of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church was established in 1866. The park downtown is named de Rivera Park in his honor, and a trust is responsible for the park and other land still today.

Now, onto the cache

First Stage: Welcome to De Rivera Park in Put-in-Bay. This is one of the first things you'll see walking from the Jet Express docks. Please read the historical marker when you arrive at the given coordinates, with information about Joseph (José) de Rivera St. Jurgo, and Put-in-Bay/South Bass Island history.

Stage 2: Modify these coordinates below for Stage 2 to get the correct coordinates by answering the following questions…
N41 38.(619) W82 50.(073)

How many groups worked together to erect this sign? (They are listed at the bottom of the sign.)Add this to the last 3 numbers of the north coordinates (in parentheses).
How many acres were the lots? Add this to the last 3 numbers of the west coordinates (in parentheses).

Now, hop on your golf cart, and get going!

Parking for stage 2 is at N41 38.586 W82 50.044, it is the request of the grounds keeping staff that no one drives into the cemetery. You can peruse within the fence at these coordinates to find Joseph de Rivera's tomb. The cache is not directly near the tomb.

You are looking for a small screw top container, with room for a coin or very small trade items.

Another interesting fact: formerly, when we hid this cache in August 2005 until we checked in May 2012, there was a private stash (1-2 Otter Boxes) hanging in a big tree, in an obvious hole, about 30 feet north the coords. It wasn't related to any game, and belonged to a family. They would leave small souvenirs of previous island visits. They were unknowingly the first geocachers in this special place.
