Turners Falls - Forgotten Factory Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

MadMin: I attempted to contact the owner of Turners Falls - Forgotten Factory to find out about the status of this cache on October 15, 2008. I have received no response from the owner on the cache page or via email. Because of that I'm afraid I have to archive this cache.

I will be more than happy to review this cache again and (hopefully) reinstate it once you have corrected any issues with the cache. please contact me via ma.reviewer@gmail.com to do so.

Please note that unarchiving a cache page places it through the same review process as a newly proposed cache, using the cache placement guidelines currently in effect.

The cache is a white rubbermaid container hidden amidst the foundation stones of a factory building that was destroyed long ago. Park near the Great Falls Discovery Center and cross the sagging bridge over the power canal. Some clambering over rocks is necessary, so use care when approaching the cache.

Directions
Take Rte. 2 to the Turners Falls bridge over the Connecticut River. The Great Falls Discovery Center is just past the bridge on the right. Park near the Center and walk back towards the river, passing the building on the right. Cross the sagging bridge, walking to the right of the fence, where a pedestrian opening has been left for hikers. The Discovery Center is also the planned trailhead for the Canalside Trail, which is under construction.

The Cache
The cache is a round, 1.6qt white rubbermaid container. It has a logbook and some stuff. I also put some cute plastic animals in it because the Discovery Center is sort of a nature center. I really like the frogs. Please rehide carefully, as this area does get many visitors.

The Area
I placed this cache because I thought that the old factory ruins were really cool. When you get down over the hill, look back. Some of the "ground" you've been walking on is the foundations of an old factory building! I think the factory was washed out in the Great Connecticut Flood of 1936, but I'm not positive. The area's pretty safe, though I don't recommend walking around inside the openings you find next to the trail. Be careful when clambering over the rocks, and keep an ear out for a water release horn from the dam nearby. You should be above the water line anyway, but it's always best to be safe.

CITO
This is a small public recreation area, with not a lot of money for maintenance. Lots of people come here, and some like to leave trash behind. A particularly bad area is the little beach-like spot at 42° 36.691'N 72° 33.367'W. I pulled a bag out with me, but there are lots of beer bottles still there.
