Geocache Description:

Located on the shore of Lake Tarawera. Easy terrain but not suitable for buggies, watch children near edges. Note there are bait stations in the area.

On the 10th of June 1886 Tarawera volcano erupted and claimed 108 lives, being one of but not the worst volcanic disaster in New Zealand. However, the central volcanic region first became known to Europeans in the 1820's, although the first well documented visits were made by missionaries in the following decade. In 1841 Ernst Dieffenbach (naturalist and surgeon) from the N Z Company and WC Symonds travelled from Auckland to Taupo and returned via Rotorua and the Rotomahana Terraces. Dieffenbachs account of this trip is the first published description of this fascinating thermal area. A succession of visitors followed, often finding hospitality and rest from their travels at mission stations by Lake Rotorua and Lake Tarawera. It’s this latter area that the Rev. Seymour Spencer was active. In 1844 they brought Christianity to the area, establishing a mission station on this site, named Kariri (Galilee), but it was latter moved to Te Mu, near Te Wairoa.

Rev Spencer encouraged settlement at Te Wairoa (Buried Village today), and the village established there was admired as a model in its time to copy. Unfortunately it wasn't to last, the area was disturbed by the maori wars in the 1860's and soon abandoned. Following the wars the Maori returned to the village but it never recovered its previous character. The Spencer family moved to Maketu in the 1870’s and continued their missionary work from there.

The cache is a 2 litre grey plastic container.
