lynx pardinus: Today I got a very good description from a geocacher who DNFed this cache - he explained to me where he had looked for it and, alas, the cache was not at its place. To him / her, my earnest thanks.

The location of this cache was not perfect, since, a few months ago, I changed its hiding to protect the tree that sits in that small public garden. I must say I had my doubts the cache would endure - but it still did more than I expected. Now, it should be archived, so that other, newer projects can be placed in this area. It is time.

A last note. Every single time one logs "ghost finds" it clutters the owner's perception - it gives an owner the impression a cache is in its right place and doesn't trigger a maintenaince visit (not that I have been the best example on this, but I could easily have checked on this cache in August, when I was working from the Portuguese office). Please, refrain to do them.

A Água é o bem mais precioso.
Water is the most precious good

O Aqueduto das Águas Livres (ver cache The Aqueduct [Lisboa], de MAntunes) termina na Mãe d’Água das Amoreiras, após cerca de 19 km de percurso desde Caneças. Este edifício é na realidade um reservatório, concluído em 1834 com o intuito de receber e distribuir as águas do Aqueduto das Águas Livres por toda a cidade de Lisboa.

Concebido pelo arquitecto húngaro Carlos Mardel, este edíficio sóbrio, de linhas direitas, alberga um tanque central (a Arca d’Água) com 7,5 metros de profundidade e com uma capacidade de cerca de 5500 m3 e está ligado ao aqueduto pelo monumental Arco das Amoreiras (que vale a pena a visita, por si só). Actualmente, faz parte do Museu da Água, da EPAL. As suas salas são utilizadas para receber actividades culturais, nomeadamente exposições de artistas plásticos, concertos, bailados e teatros, tendo ainda um magnífico terraço sobre a cidade de Lisboa.

É um monumento impressionante, pela sua beleza e imponência, mas principalmente pela sua discrição, coadunante com a água que alberga e que durante dezenas de anos distribuiu por Lisboa, actualmente tantas vezes menosprezada, mas tão primariamente essencial para a Vida e qualidade de Vida de que usufruímos.

Portugal faz parte do Sul da Europa, paredes-meias com o Norte de África (e as suas influências saharianas) e com o Atlântico Norte, de cujos sistemas meteorológicos depende directamente o nosso clima (caracterizado por uma relativa amenidade, mas com temperaturas extremas que variam entre os 0º de Inverno e os 40º de Verão, e com estações tradicionalmente – ainda será assim? – ‘bem delimitadas’ – de Outubro a Abril chovia mais ou menos intensamente, nos restantes meses o tempo era relativamente seco). Os maiores rios que desaguam em Portugal nascem num país tão dependente e sequioso de água quanto o nosso. Anos como o de 2005 só demonstram a fragilidade da nossa dependência em relação à água – sobretudo sabendo que, os grandes ciclos de seca da Península Ibérica podem acontecer em intervalos de 50 anos, com a duração de 3 anos (nada nos garante que volte a chover em Outubro…).

Por isso, é necessário aprendermos um pouco a racionalizar os nossos gastos de água – para pararmos de esbanjar um recurso que é tão essencial à Vida, e que nos é tão escasso. Temos que, se calhar, aprender a dar valor a algo que, para nós, se obtém a partir de um gesto tão simples quanto abrir uma torneira – mas que, de tão essencial à Vida, nos levou a construir infra-estruturas tão magníficas quanto esta Mãe D’Água das Amoreiras, o Aqueducto das Águas Livres, ou a Barragem de Castelo do Bode ou do Alqueva. Em anexo, por isso, um pequeno texto informativo, com o patrocínio da Associação de Munícipios do Algarve, sobre como cada um de nós deve contribuir activamente para a poupança de água no nosso dia-a-dia (não é propriamente nada de novo, nem ‘ciência de foguetões’ (sic), mas é algo que devemos interiorizar verdadeiramente e pôr activamente em prática).

The Águas Livres Aqueduct (‘Free Waters’ Aqueduct would be a direct translation to English) (please, take a look at “The Aqueduct [Lisboa]” cache by MAntunes, located nearby) ends in the Amoreiras Mãe d’Água (again, a direct translation would be “Water Mother”) after a 19 km course since Caneças. This building is in reality a water reservoir, finished in 1834 with the purpose of collecting and distributing the Águas Livres Aqueduct all over Lisbon.

Designed by the Hungarian Architect Carlos Mardel, this sober building, of straight lines, shelters a central tank (the Water Ark) with 7,5 meters deep and a 5500m3 capacity. It is connected to the Aqueduct by the monumental Amoreiras Arch (that is worth a visit, only by itself). Nowadays, it is part of the Water Museum. Its rooms are used to receive cultural activities, namely exhibitions, concerts, theatre plays and dance events. It also has a magnificent balcony over the city of Lisbon.

It is an impressive monument, for its beauty and splendor, but mainly for its circumspection, in harmony with the water it shelters and that it distributed for Lisbon for so many years. A water that we so many times downplay but that is so primarily essential to Life and to the Life quality we have. Portugal lies in South Europe and as so is directly influenced by the North of Africa (with it’s Saharian influences) and the North Atlantic (though usually designated as mild, Portuguese extreme temperatures vary between 0º and 40ºC, while traditionally year seasons are ‘well delimited’ – is it still like this? – with rain pouring down from October till April, and relatively dry weather in the remaining months). All main Portuguese rivers flow from a country that is as dependant and thirsty as Portugal. Dry years (like 2005) only prove how fragile our relationship with water is – specially knowing that that Iberian Peninsula major drought cycles may occur in a 50 year span and last for 3 consecutive years (nothing assures that it will start raining again in October…).

So we need to learn how to rationally use water – so we can stop wasting off such a Life precious and scarce resource. We need to learn to value something that for us is only a split second away from our hand – but that is so essential to Life that made us build such wonderful structures as this ‘Mãe d’Água’, the ‘Águas Livres Aqueduct’ or ‘Alqueva’ and ‘Castelo do Bode’ Dams.
