A nice easy hike from the Stehekin Airport along the River Trail southbound.
Once you are at the airport this is an easy hike of about 1/2 mile of fairly level terrain. However getting to Stehekin at the North end of Lake Chelan is quite an undertaking unless you are able to get there in your own plane. The airstrip is quite rough and is in very mountainous terrain. From the airport the river trail starts at the very south end of the runway.
Other ways to get to Stehekin are by boat from Chelan. The Lady Of The Lake ferries passengers every day at least through the summer. From Stehekin a shuttle bus is available to get you close to the airport and the River trail. Also you can hike in. From The North Cascades Pass highway (highway 20) the Cascade Pass trail takes you to Cottonwood, about a 5 hour hike. From here you can get a once a day National Park Service shuttle to the airport
and on beyond to Stehekin. Otherwise if you hike all the way in instead of waiting for the bus it is an additional 9 miles to the airport and another 4 to Stehekin. Note: to get to the Cascade Pass trail take highway 20 to Marblemount. Cross the Skagit river and follow the road to its end. The last 2 miles is supposed to be pretty rough. The trail begins at the end of the road. There are also several other trails that lead to Stehekin.
This area is very scenic and the cache will be a small part of the adventure.
Cache is located about 120 feet off the River Trail in very light bushwacking.
There is a possibility of rattle snakes in this area, although I have never seen one.
