Geocache Description:

This is a 6 part Multi Cache. Parking is near the posted coordinates in the Gerald H Vanatta Park, which is right off of Derry Street. The park has a Legion Ball field and hosts the Lawnton Legion Baseball team. The park also has a little league field, tennis courts and a picnic area. It is also the home of the Tornado Alley Cache by kingsting & The GeoGnomes. If you feel adventurous, you may want to try this challenging cache if you haven’t already found it.

In 1799, just twenty-three years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a court order divided Lower Paxton Township into two equal parts. Swatara was the name chosen for the southern part of the area. The word is thought to be from an Iroquois Indian word meaning "Where we fed on eels." Swatara Township is comprised of 14.6 square miles, equivalent to 9,344 acres.

An atlas of 1875 shows Churchville, New Benton, and Highland Village as population centers. Today we know them as Oberlin, Bressler, and Enhaut, respectively. Wheat and corn fields have become Lawnton, Lenker Manor, Harrisburg Estates, Rutherford Heights. Georgian Manor, Lawnford Acres and Chambers Hill. On April 1, 1911 Swatara obtained First Class Township status with a population of 5,630. According to the 2000 census, 22,611 residents now make up the Township.

This multi cache will take you on a short stroll on some alleys near the park. The posted coordinates will take you to a structure that you see every day. Similar structures and the calculations will be the same at all waypoints. On the structure you will see two or more sets of numbers which are used for identification purposes. Even these structures need identification numbers for tracking purposes. The top number which is needed begins with a “P” or “A” and the bottom number begins with a “S”. Take the top number (“P” or “A”) and add the 5 digits together. Then take the bottom number (“S”) and add the 5 digits together. For example, if the number was A12345, than the results would be 1+2+3+4+5 or 15. Once you have the numbers added, then you will use the results of the top number and add it to the last 3 digits of the Latitude given below and the results of the bottom number and add it to the last 3 digits of the Longitude.

The Latitude and Longitude for the various steps of the multi cache are listed below. You must take them in the order shown to get to the final cache. The walk will be an easy half mile walk to find the coordinates for the final cache location. If you decide to drive instead of walk, be careful as some of the stops are in traffic and have no safe place to park. The cache container is a large rubbermaid container with room for travel bugs and trade items. Several trade items have been placed in the cache and two PA Lottery tickets for the FTF. Have fun with this one.
