Geocache Description:

Ah! What is there handsomer on a plate and tastier to eat than a hunk of lutefisk?

Lighthouselady and HeidiI set out in search of the perfect lutefisk. For the uninformed, Lutefisk is a lovely Scandinavian dish - cod specially prepared in a large vat of lye. Yes, lye - the humble chemical used to clean drains, raised to a whole new level as a recipe ingredient.

According to our research, lutefisk was invented by the womenfolk of small villages on the Scandinavian coastline. These villages were often frequented by hungry Vikings, who were distracted from their regular activities by the offer of a hearty meal. Textbooks tell us that within a few years the Viking era had ended. Most historians think that the advent of more powerful weapons doomed the proud seafaring warriors. But some historians cling to another theory - it's pretty hard to wander the globe plundering and pillaging after a few lutefisk dinners...

During our travels, we visited a likely lutefisk spot, where we met Henry - who was eloquent in his descriptions of the lovely Swedish dinners prepared here twice a year. He spoke of pork roast stuffed with dates, rice pudding...We asked him about Lutefisk. He made a face and said, "Oh, no, that's a Norweigan dish." Later he admitted he was German. Go figure.

The building at this spot was built by the Swedish-Finnish Temperance Society in 1938 with lumber recycled from older buildings in the area. (Temperance? Does that explain the lack of lutefisk?) Check out the folk art painting inside if you get a chance.

Cache is in a large plastic jar, and contains items that just make us hungrier for lutefisk.
