The Great Tower was completed in 1682. It was one of the results
of the wish of king Fredrik III to have a stronger fortress at
Halden, causing a big building programme to start in 1661. It is
one of the outer fortresses built to prevent an enemy from getting
a foothold to attack the main or inner fortress. The other two
outer fortresses also have caches: Gyldenløve [The Golden Lion]
(GCPMYH) and Overberget [Fredriksten Golf Fortress].
(GCWWA9)
It is a six-sided, closed structure. Originally it had a roof,
but this was removed during the last world war. Above the entrance
to the Great Tower is the monogram of Christian V. (The same
monogram one sees in Fredrikstad at the King's Stone cache
GCJM7J.)
The main entrance to the tower has heavy, studded wooden
double-doors (though there are a few holes where bolts are
missing!) If the main doors are ever locked, the cache will not be
accessible. Please let me know if this is the case. You do not need
to pull at stones, roof tiles or cement, or anything destructive,
to find this cache. The slightly high star-rating is due to the
concealment rather than any physical challenge in reaching it.
Because of its location, the cache is camouflaged.
When replacing the cache, please be sure that it cannot
easily move from its place - just as you found it, hopefully.
(If it were to move, it would certainly be muggled.) The container
is a sample-holder, so there is room for small treasures. One can
park almost next to the tower, by the cafe at Fredrksten camping.
This is but a short walk from the rest of the fortress.
NB IF the double-doors are locked for maintenance or a function,
ONLY THEN may you use the ALT cache, micro size, to log a find.
