B-36 Peacemaker Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Soul Eagle: I have reluctantly decided to archive this cache after being in use for 15 years because I am no longer able to keep up maintenance on a timely manner plus the low number of visits possible due to it's remote location. I still believe it's a great location for a geocache due to its location at an historical aircraft site and monument.

I am proud to say my geocache has lasted for 15 years of service with it still containing the original logbook in good condition except for being a little damp when I retrieved it. Thanks for everyone that has visited this geocache.

Geocache Description:

The cache is located on the top of a hill and offers an excellent scenic hike, awesome view, interesting history of a crash site and momument of the a B36 Peacemaker Aircraft.
The Burgoyne's Cove site is relatively accessible with a well marked 1km trail leading to it.

The crash site is of a Corvair B-36 Peacemaker that crashed in 1953 while flying low in poor weather and struck the 896-foot tall ridge at an elevation of 800 feet with wreckage that was strewn for 3/4-mile across the hillside. The designation of "Peacemaker" was very appropriate for the B-36. Its nuclear delivery capability kept the peace for well over a decade. The reputation it achieved for never having fired a shot in anger is well deserved.

To get to the crash site and cache take Route 232 off of Route 230 near Clarenville, which leads to Burgoyne's Cove. In Burgoyne's Cove look for the sign to the slate quarry at N48°10.254' W053°42.982', turn left at this intersection onto a road, and then right further in on that road to the slate quarry. Travel down the dirt road approx. 3km until you see a small sign on the left for the USAF RB-36 Crash Site at N48°10.650' W053°39.940'. The trail up the hill is well marked. It's a 1km hike, about 1/2 hour walk and pretty steep so be sure that you have good shoes. There are seats along the trail if you need to take a break.
