Put in at the Squantz Pond boat launch (fee for parking) on the
EAST side of Route 39 just south of the causeway, at N41°
30.461' W73° 28.205'.
From the Launch Ramp, proceed two-thirds of a mile @ 151 degrees
magnetic, around the mark off Spear Point at N41° 30.082' W73°
27.581'
From there proceed 2 miles at 18 degrees magnetic (past Little
Neck [don't miss "Little Neck Altocache"] on the
right, and Great Neck on the Left), and another mile at 350
degrees, past Deer Island to the southern point of Green Island.
CAUTION: There is a very small island (Shipwreck Island) between
Deer and Green. It is marked with two bouys, one to the North and
one to the South. Stay outside of these bouys! There are a couple
boat-killer rocks here! (Hmmmm... maybe a hydrocache could
go there...)
There are 3 places to land. Landing #2 on the West side of the
island is suitable for canoes or a small fishing boat. BUT -
Landing #2 offers the easiest route to the cache. Landing #1 and #3
on the east side of the island are better places for larger boats.
Bring an anchor to hold the boat away
Landing #1 - N41° 33.071' W73° 28.220' - hidden
beach.
Landing #2 - N41° 32.854' W73° 28.193' - small boats,
approach from south.
Landing #3 - N41° 32.830' W73° 27.98' - nice campsite,
but camping is not allowed.
The cache is a very well-stocked ammo box, near mid-island,
about 100 feet above the Lake. There are no trails on the island,
except up and down the east shore. Bring bug repellant. Definitely
want shoes/boots for the hike!
Bring bathing suit and towel. After the cache, go to the south
end of the island, and jump off "Chicken Rock" (Southern tip, west
side). You will find forty boats parked off of this rock on a nice
afternoon.
For a really nice swim, try the NICE beach on the east side of
Skeleton Island (south of the boat launch), at N41° 29.95', W73°
27.17', or try the sandy lagoon by Orchard point at N41°
29.84', W73° 26.86' You can also find places to pull up the
boat and have a picnic at Little Neck N41° 30.78', W73°
27.37'
Enjoy the day!
