Harbour Hustle Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

SecretFive: Had a walk out to check on this cache this morning.
Sadly as this one has been muggled again..
I think it is time to archive - sad to see it go but we hope it has brought fun to all those that have found it and maybe it will make way for someone else to place a new cache in this lovely nature reserve.
Thanks to all those that have found in the past.

Geocache Description:

This is the fourth in a series of multi-caches we're hoping to set up in the area and once again we've built it round local history and places of interest.

The co-ordinates given are for the suggested car park and first location.

The walk to the cache is just under a mile on mainly firm surfaces of tarmac and shingle. Unfortunately the last few metres to the cache are not wheelchair friendly.

1801 The Harbour at Rye Act of 1801 authorised tolls to be collected to maintain the harbour at Rye. Rye Harbour became a separate village in 1806.

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, dedicated by the Nature Conservancy Council as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is a 209 acre tract of shingle ridges formed over hundreds of years as the sea, which lapped the walls of Camber Castle as far back as 1594, receded. It contains alluvial grazing marsh, arable fields, salt marsh, intertidal sand and mud and several flooded gravel pits - a varied habitat indeed. Over 350 species of flowering plant have been recorded here and it's a nationally important site for invertebrates with over 1300 species identified to date. The site is, however, perhaps best known for its birdlife and particularly for its 50 or so breeding species which include Little Tern, Common Tern, Sandwich Tern, Oystercatcher, Red Shank, Ringed Plover, Corn Bunting, Yellow Wagtail, Wheatear. It is also the place to be seen if you are a migrant or overwintering bird, with over 270 species noted.

The co-ordinates given are for the suggested car park and first location.

The tarmac road leading through the reserve is not owned by the reserve. The road is owned, maintained and used by the Environmental Agency no unauthorised vehicles should go beyond the gate. Even if the gate is open, please do not drive through.

The cache container is a small camouflaged pot (larger than a film canister though) within an outer container. The outer container is now firmly fixed into the location and is there to maintain the location within the 'shifting' landscape.

Note: This is a popular area for holidaymakers, walkers and birdwatchers, especially on fine days and during the holidays, who might become curious when they see someone delving around looking for something. The cache is in a very open location. Caution is required when retrieving and replacing the cache. Please try to avoid drawing attention to your activities whilst at the cache location. Much as we enjoy visiting the Reserve, we'd rather not have to keep replacing the container. :)
