This cemetery has some interesting background that we wanted to share and thought you might enjoy a piece of local history. Thanks to DooWopDee for providing us with this article where Virginia Miles, of the Bradford Landmark Society, presented information about local "colorful characters." Beth Danias from the Times Herald wrote the article and the following is an excerpt about Madame Stoddard.

Mrs. Miles told about one of her favorites, Madame Stoddard, who was a "lady of the night" living in Bradford in the 1880's.
Mrs. Miles said the woman had a daughter "who never knew of her trade." The daughter attended various boarding schools in Buffalo, N.Y., before going to Europe to school.
While there, she met and fell in love with a duke, Mrs. Miles explained. The dukes family sent a detective to Bradford to make certain the girls's family was appropriate for their son to marry into.
When the royal family discovered Mrs. Stoddard was a lady of the evening, the young couple broke up and the girl returned to the United States.
Madame Stoddard later moved to Virginia, Mrs. Miles, stated, but after her death, was brought back to Bradford for burial.
Today, there remains a statue of Madame Stoddard, a monument of a woman with her hand upon her brow located in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Hope you enjoy the history and the cache!
