Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS LOCATED NEAR AN "ABANDONED" CEMETERY THAT SERVED A LOCAL MINING TOWN.

THE CACHE IS NOT IN THE CEMETERY. IT IS ABOUT 200 FEET AWAY.

There are about 25 marked graves in this cemetery that served the town mining town of Doble.(see "Doble" cache). The names of those interred here, except for one child, are lost to history. The large cross and small markers were placed there by Boy Scouts during the 1940's.

On Memorial Day in 2005, the Big Bear Valley Historical Society held a service at the site to honor these unknown pioneers. Their hope is to establish a tradition of Memorial Day services here.

To get there you take Highway 18 to Holcomb Valley Road. This intersection is located at the northeast end of Baldwin Lake. Turn north onto Holcomb Valley Road and travel about two-tenths of a mile. On the east side of the road you will see a break in the fence and a "Critical Rare Plant Habitat" sign. Park here and you are about 250' away from the cache.

Looking east at the Doble Graveyard This faded photograph (c: 1901) is the only known picture of the Doble schoolhose that, oddly enough, was built a very short distance north of the cemetery. At that time the ore mill thundered day and night. Doble had a population of about 200, with stores, livery stables, saloons, boarding houses, a hotel, and a post office.
