Geocache Description:

The Blue Tier Giant.

The fattest tree in tasmania. The Friends of the Blue Tier managed to fit 70 people in the hollow section of this trees trunk.

Its situated in some of the most beautiful wet myrtle forest in the world. Only a short walk in. Area is earmarked for logging. So enjoy this one while you can. The cache is safe cause it is within Forrestry Tasmanias 20 meter radius they allow around all giant trees. However, the walk in will be SERIOUSLY effected by clear felling that forestry plan. So i suggest you do this one quick. I wont go into the politics of this cause this site doesnt encourage it...but if you are interested in the plight of this area check out (visit link) it has a lot of good information on the area.

So to get to the cache follow these directions:

Turn off the highway to Goulds Country (20 km from St. Helens) and travel 9km towards Poimena until you reach the Lottah crossroad, turn left and continue on Lottah Road for 6.7 km and turn left into Lehners Ridge Road (opposite a blue metal crushing pit). Continue on Lehners Ridge Road for 1.7 km where there is a small pull-off area on the right side of the road. The walking track starts on the left hand side of the road and is marked with pink tape.. Follow the pink tape through the forest (passing through a magnificent sassafras \ fern glade) descending to meet an old water race after approximately 15 minutes, turn left onto the water race and follow for about 10 minutes until a double pink tape indicates a turn-off to the right, descending a few stone steps – from here the track is a bit steep and slippery for about 200 meters and gradually levels out as you approach the floor of the valley where the trees get bigger – until you reach the Blue Tier Giant approximately 35 mins. walk from the car park.
In parts the pink tape is hard to find....so make sure to jot the carpark co-ords into the gps...they are: 41 14.013 147 59.178.

I hope you enjoy this one...and if you do make sure to check out the website: (visit link)
