Geocache Description:

The original cache location was placed by The Blackmore Two back in 2005. It was adopted in 2008 by Mrs Kipling (aka Boomtown Cats) and again adopted in 2011 by Virgoan65. Special thanks go to these members for maintaining and bringing many geocachers to this fantastic location.

The legacy of this cache momentarily fell into the depths of the archive library in 2016 but with kind permission from local reviewer La Lunatica for unarchiving it and Virgoan65 for allowing us to adopt, we are now hoping to keep it going for the future. In order to make this happen, the hiding spot at the GZ has had to change to make it safe for visitors and to avoid any damage to the structure and surrounding environment and so we kindly ask that when you visit do not remove any bricks from the structure.

There are many angles you can approach this geocache from; the quickest is by parking at the suggested waypoint coordinates at Top Lodge Finshade Wood carpark owned by The Forestry Commission (postcode for SatNavs is NN17 3BB). There are also many other caches within these woods.

Good footwear is advised as the ground can be muddy in places especially after foul weather. In previous logs some people have mentioned scrambling over boggy ground and fallen trees. If you get stuck trying to find it, use the trailhead clue waypoint and follow the small path along the old railway cutting down to the GZ. It is suitable for dogs and children, however along the railway cutting there are some steep edges and so supervision is a must.

The forest canopy can affect the coordinations at the final site to about 10-15ft so you may have to resort to the encrypted clue. The cache is not hidden within any brickwork or underneath the structure and is a rectangle Lock N Lock style container wrapped in black tape.

If you carry on down the railway cutting you will come across ‘the steps to nowhere’ (an old broken footbridge) and you may be as lucky as previous loggers to find herds of deers, badgers, red kites and many other species of wildlife.

Thanks go to The Forestry Commission for their kind permission to place this cache.

Railway line history: The London & North west railway ran a line from Market Harborough to Peterborough. The line opened in 1879, and closed to passengers in 1966. A small portion of the line to the east of here is still open as a preserved part of the Nene valley railway, between Wansford & Peterborough.
