Along the shore of Boston Pond, near some trails in the woods around the pond. About a mile away from the Houghton County airport. Cache is mid-sized, custom-camo'd plastic jug w/ screw-top lid. Accessible by car in the summer via the access road, or snowmobile/snowshoe/skis in the winter.
The access-road to the pond parallels the old Soo Line rail bed which is now an ORV / snowmobile trail.
The pond covers roughly 140 acres, is about 9 feet deep at it's deepest point, and is home to cranes, ducks, great blue herons and numerous fish (even though many freeze during the winter.) Bald Eagles have been seen in the area -- unfortunately I haven't had that priveledge just yet.
The pond was originally created in the 1860's by the Boston & Albany Mining Company (later renamed the 'Peninsula Franklin Junior', and even later, 'Franklin'.) The company dammed two no-name trickles with an earthen dam which is about 2500 long. You can see the dam from the bridge on the nearby ORV trail at N47 10.426 W088 31.949. The man-made reservoir/pond was used to cool and wash the engines of the copper industry. The earthen dam was improved/restored in 1968, raising the pond's level by four feet, making the pond a bit more hospitable to fish during the winter months.
The area is sporadically frequented by locals looking for good fishing spots, so please be as stealthy as necessary if anyone is around.
